Episode 50 Podcast Transcript

Speaker 1 (00:00):

When you want to achieve great things in life, it comes down to mindset, strategy or skillset. Rob Kropp and Dan Stones here from Pravar Group, welcome back to Another Matters episode.

Speaker 2 (00:16):

Hi everyone. Today we’re going to be focusing on mindset matters and the power of momentum.

Speaker 1 (00:22):

When you’re trying to build your business, boost your leadership and balance this whilst living a fulfilling family life, what we need is momentum. Unlike motivation, which comes and goes, momentum builds with action. Momentum is the fuel that drives change. Momentum is what keeps you going when things get hard and you’d rather quit.

Speaker 2 (00:43):

And where we’re going to start today is rolling out four key principles that are going to help you build long-term and sustainable results using the power of momentum. The first one we’re going to kick off with is starting small. As you said, Rob, momentum is fleeting and if you want to do hard things and achieve great things in this world, it’s going to take either a lot of motivation, but when it comes and goes, it’s hard to pick the right time and do that consistently. So our first little principle is start small and begin with tiny habits, using things that are easy to integrate into your daily routine.

Speaker 1 (01:18):

Yeah, I think this is one of the big things to build momentum. A lot of people try, especially this time of the year, they try and make big sweeping change and it’s like think about someone who’s trying to get their steps in. If they’re only doing 3000 steps at the moment, they shoot for the stars and try and hit 10,000 steps of the day instead of trying to make big change all at once and make huge, big habitual changes on a daily basis. It’s way too hard and no wonder most people fail come the end of January. Small change one change at a time over time is the key to building momentum, isn’t it?

Speaker 2 (01:55):

It really is, and I think people get confused when they talk about, I want a huge result, so it’s going to take this huge effort, it’s going to take this huge habit or a huge shift. Really, the huge result comes from the tiny shift in the habit. That’s what builds it. We talk about it being like a leading domino and it’s a thing that we talk about at Pravar all the time. Leading dominoes, one change at a time over time. It’s the real linchpin of this whole thing.

Speaker 1 (02:21):

Yeah, I think when you start small, you get to build the belief. You get to build the confidence. If you can start stringing together a week of eating really well or a week of going for a walk every single day, something really small, it builds the belief, it builds the confidence within yourself. It starts to build the habit. The habit then starts to seize results. The results build the momentum. The momentum then perpetuates and keeps building. So I think little small changes really goes a long way in getting started and then once you get started, it helps you keep going, doesn’t it?

Speaker 2 (03:03):

Absolutely. You get dolled in and it becomes that habit. It’s the standard by which you measure yourself. I think an example of that, just to take it from going to the gym, starting small and building that momentum, taking it a notch down. Start with putting your shoes on. That’s the small step. That’s the starting small. Can I put my shoes on? Usually you’d be able to say, yes, I can get my runners on, then I’m going to put ’em on. If I can get my runners on, I can get to the front door and if I can get to the front door, all of a sudden I’m out and I’m on the road and I’m going for my run, my walk or whatever it is. That’s another example of that start small mentality. So the smallest thing you can pick will start the ball rolling, which is all we’re trying to do when we start trying to build momentum.

Speaker 1 (03:46):

Yeah, love it.

Speaker 2 (03:48):

Second one, Rob, I’m going to let you take this one. Focus on consistency.

Speaker 1 (03:52):

Yeah. Consistency is key when building momentum, something done over and over and over again is the key to long-term sustainable success using momentum and co consistency. When you think about what is consistent, when you become consistent, you become unstoppable.

Speaker 2 (04:16):

Yeah, absolutely. And momentum breeds and lives off consistency, unlike motivation, which is anyone can be motivated, I’ve done it before, I’m sure you have as well. You get to that point and it’s like, I’m pumped. I’m going to do this thing, and it’s the most amazing thing in the world for one day. You do it once, there’s no consistency with it, and then you just wonder where it all went, so it just disappears on you. So that absolutely is key is having that focus on being consistent and again, building from starting small into consistency is what’s going to help me get there.

Speaker 1 (04:45):

At Pravar, we use the framework called the Bevan, and when you think around, the reason why we call it the Bevan is because it’s named after Michael Bevan the cricketer, and the reason why he was so successful is because he built his career off hitting ones and twos all day long, and he built great innings off the bat of hitting ones and twos and consistently changing and changing who was facing the balls at the time. Compare that to someone like a David Warner or someone like that who would trying to knock the cover off the ball. Every single ball they were trying to go for the big, the fours and the six with the Glen Maxwells of the world, they never achieved the level of success someone like Bevan did because they were all somewhat all show no go to some degree. But you compare that to Bevan one’s and twos all day long with the four or the six in there, and that’s what built long-term sustainable success. No different when it comes to habits, big results in your life is off the back of what you do on a daily, weekly basis. That’s the correlation between sport and life. It’s the small consistent habits done over and over and over again is what just creates the results.

Speaker 2 (06:14):

Yeah, we have these conversations with clients all the time and it’s amazing the stories we tell, and if you’re listening to the podcast, you’ll hear this. It’s not big sweeping one-off things that happen to guys. I can’t remember one client, Rob that’s gone, Hey, this one day this happened and my whole life changed. It just doesn’t happen that way.

Speaker 1 (06:31):

Think around when it’s sales, it’s consistently doing business development on a weekly basis. Think around when lead generation, it’s consistently getting leads through the door and quotes out the door when it comes to team, it’s the way that you consistently show up and lead and manage your team, your health and wellness, the way that you consistently eat well and train well. The way that you show up as a husband, as a father, and as a dad. It’s what you consistently do over and over and over and again. It’s the patterns that we repeat in terms of behaviours is what creates the results. So consistency is key. So regardless if you feel like doing something or not, it’s just consistently showing up day in, day out, which creates the results in your life and that’s what builds momentum and that momentum builds the results in your life.

Speaker 2 (07:22):

Yeah, absolutely. So those two go hand in hand. I think starting small and focusing on consistency. Next two, we’re going to touch on, the first one is going to be creating a supportive environment. And really this is about surrounding yourself with people who are going to support you on your journey and remove and help remove those obstacles that are going to get in the way that might hinder you as you go forward. So having good people around you, I think everyone understands this, but how many people spend the time to cultivate the environment that supports you getting rid of the distractions, hopefully setting up things even as small as your phone notifications. It could be stuff if it’s a health thing in the cupboard, get rid of the shit, food, whatever it is, create a supportive environment that’s going to help you maintain that consistency that we just talked about.

Speaker 1 (08:07):

Yeah, I think when I think around your environment, and especially when you think around accountability, there’s three layers of accountability. There’s self accountability, there’s external accountability where a coach or a mentor holds you accountable, and then there’s that group or community accountability, and when you get all three of those put together, that’s when you become unstoppable because you hold yourself to the highest standard. Someone’s guiding you and holding you accountable, and then you’ve got an environment around you where success breeds success in that environment and you either step up and shine in that environment or you become fearful and self elect out, but the right people in the right environment really shine.

Speaker 2 (08:56):

It does, and I think that’s why we’re huge on it at Pravar, right? We are big on community. We’ve got such a big part of our coaching that inspires that change. It also helps build momentum. When you think about it, you said success breeds success. That’s that upward spiral. What we’re talking about again is another form of momentum and being able to build that momentum from the people and the places you surround yourself with, the world you live in can help build that momentum as well.

Speaker 1 (09:21):

Yeah. It opens your minds to what’s possible. It helps you build belief. It drives change. It’s that environment where once that collective group of people that try with a common goal, a common cause are all working together to achieve amazing things, that group then becomes a unstoppable. Not only do you become unstoppable, but the whole collective group does, and then it becomes this perpetuating ball of momentum that just rolls forward and then everyone wins together.

Speaker 2 (09:55):

Yeah, exactly right. In terms of what we’ve talked about, the three things we’ve now done, we’ve started small, focused on consistency and created that supportive environment. There’s the one thing that a lot of people forget to do at that point. They almost burn themselves out unless they do this last thing.

Speaker 1 (10:14):

And that’s celebrate progress and it’s huge. And this is the fourth one that we’re going to talk around today is the fourth principle is celebrating progress. It’s so important to be able to celebrate the little wins along the way, isn’t it?

Speaker 2 (10:28):

It is. It really is, and it doesn’t matter how small they are. Can you celebrate that small thing that you set up when we said start small? Can you celebrate the fact that you put your shoes on to get out the door to go for that walk? Just as a really basic example. Of course you can little fist pump, little pat on the back a little bit. Yeah, I’m doing it. This is working. This is great. That acknowledgement is what we’re talking about. You don’t need to throw a party, you don’t need to tell the world about it, but you need to be able to recognise the progress that you’re making and celebrating your progress with those small wins is hugely important for building momentum

Speaker 1 (11:01):

When you want to achieve great things in life. It comes down to mindset, strategy or skillset. And I want to go as far as saying is that mindset is almost like 80% of the result and connecting this back to celebrating progress. What? By celebrating your progress, what it does is it builds your mindset, it builds confidence, it builds your self-worth, it builds your self belief because what you’re doing is saying, I said I was going to do this. I’ve done it, I’ve done it, I’ve done it. So what you’re doing is building momentum from the inside out because your mindset drives your behaviour. Your behaviour drives your action, your action drives the result. The result reinforces your mindset. So it becomes a self perpetuating success cycle, but it all starts with the mindset and the mindset comes from celebrating the little things along the way. It develops that mindset. If you can get it right, that’s what helps you build the momentum to keep going on the positive front.

Speaker 2 (12:06):

It absolutely does, and I think it’s important here that we also stress that we’re not advocating that you just go out and kid yourself that things are great. If there’s shit going on, stuff goes sideways, reality’s still going to kick in. The world’s got to remind you of things along the way. You can’t get away from that. But falling off the waggon and having challenges is still to be expected.

Speaker 1 (12:25):

Yeah, correct. And it’s even in the most challenging times, there’s always great things to acknowledge around the things. So to be able to celebrate progress, it’s looking on a daily basis, being grateful for what’s happened on a weekly basis, celebrating the good things on a quarterly basis, locking in your last quarter and review yearly locking in your yearly wins. So it’s your ability to celebrate progress along the way, along the journey, stopping smelling the roses, especially for you high achievers out there. You very rarely stop and reflect and celebrate the good things. This is the fuel that builds momentum that helps you keep going and achieving good long-term sustainable success.

Speaker 2 (13:06):

It does. To summarise that, I think there’s two points you made there. One is to reinforce the positive thinking and sort of get that balance right. Our self-talk is usually very negative. We’re surrounded by so much negative news in the world to go there and out of self-protection biologically, there’s a lot of negative gearing, if you like, in a mindset perspective. So I think balancing out the equation sort of makes sense to people. The other one you talked about is belief stacking, and maybe just quickly talk around what belief stacking is and how that progress kicks in from a belief point of view and why that’s so important.

Speaker 1 (13:37):

When you think around what your beliefs are, you believe is what you deem to be true, and we are what we believe, and so belief stacking is stacking the beliefs in terms of the direction that we want to go. So it’s our ability to stack the beliefs of what we believe in terms of what we want to achieve, where we’re going, who we’re becoming, and what we want in our life of. We can stack those foals in our mind. That’s what propels us and builds the momentum to our mindset, drives our actions, and so when we get the right beliefs in our minds by stacking them, that’s what pushes us forward and goes a long way in building that momentum to keep going.

Speaker 2 (14:18):

Yeah, absolutely. So there you have it, four simple steps or simple in theory, simple to understand and comprehend, maybe a little bit harder in practise, but if you can swap that motivation factor that all or nothing that trying to hit the six, as you said in the Bevin example, swap that for singles, start to build some momentum. You’ll find that your progress grows and gets a hell of a lot quicker. So I think, Rob, that’s it for today’s mindset Matters on momentum.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
