The key to having a great team is putting the right people in the right positions supported by the right processes.


It is important to consider the following:

  • Get clarity on the position.  It is important that you don't create a position to suit a person, rather you find the right person for the position available.  This means getting clear on the Accountabilities, Tasks and Outcomes of the Role, plus the key Qualification Requirements of the Person (including personal attributes and position competencies).  This ensures that you not only attract the right candidate in the recruitment process but have the right team member that fits the culture of the company to deliver the outcomes required from the role.
  • The right people see their job as a responsibility. They understand the crucial role they play in the position is having the responsibility to plan, create and execute tasks.  They will not commit to something that they cannot do, or only do halfway. Because of this, they do not need to micromanaged as they are self-motivated and driven by their passion for your business and what it does.
  • Processes create consistency and enable scaleability.  If you don't support your team with the right processes and accountability, they will default to their way of operating... which may not be the right way or your company's way of doing things.

People and systems set you free, however for this to occur you MUST empower and trust your team, hold them accountable, stop being a control freak and relinquish control to enable them to do what they were hired to do in the first place.
